Meet Cherene

Hello! It’s lovely to meet you…

I’m Cherene -owner & head instructor of Defy Gravity Fitness studio in Newcastle (NSW), and the original founder of Pol-arise Fitness & Dance in Australia.

I haven’t always been in the fitness business – you could say I was a bit of a “late bloomer” 🌻. For me, it all started in 2004 when at the age of 41/42, I discovered the brand new fitness/sport of Pole Dance which at that time was just coming to Australia.

Prior to that I’d never enjoyed going to the gym or sport or anything terribly fitness(y), but in my early 40’s I felt like I needed to do SOMETHING to maintain my health and fitness, so when the Pole Dance came along – something that looked like fun, was a bit different, and something that might keep my interest for more than 3 visits – well, I wanted IN.

Fast Forward 12-18 months, and my daughter Bailey and I opened our first studio in 2005 – one of the first 3 Pole Studios in Australia, and the only one (at that time) aimed specifically at mainstream women looking for alternative fitness solutions. It wasn’t long before word spread and we opened our 2nd and 3rd studios – and our offerings expanded into Aerial Yoga and Silks, Barre/Pilates, Suspension Fitness – and now of course Bungee Fitness.

Here’s a sneak peek at the journey so far…

Here we are 17 YEARS later, thousands of students later, several Business Awards and Championship titles later. My daughter Bailey now runs Pol-arise Fitness & Dance, and now at 59 my passion is STILL in helping women discover fun, alternative solutions to keep them moving, active, motivated and building self confidence through DEFY GRAVITY Fitness & Wellness.

I have had the opportunity to train with some of the very best in the industry, both within Australia and from around the world – and my now extensive knowledge and experience encompasses a broad range of dance and fitness styles including –

  • Pole Dance
  • Aerial Yoga / Fitness
  • Barre x Pilates
  • Functional Suspension Fitness
  • Bungee Fitness

In addition to the physical fitness side of things, I have also studied extensively in –

  • Nutrition, Health, Lifestyle and Behaviour Change (Pn1)
  • Meditation, Breath work & Mindfulness
  • Supplements Educator – sports, natural and herbal supplements

These are the things that have helped me become the HAPPIEST and HEALTHIEST version of me I’ve ever been, and that I bring to YOU through Defy Gravity with our always FUN, alternative fitness classes, private lessons and gravity defying experiences.

My Mission & Purpose is Simple…

I want –

  • to have you feeling fitter, stronger, more energised and self confident
  • to empower you to become the BEST version of yourself you can be, and
  • to provide you with a space where we can ALL leave our troubles at the door, be ourselves, and get fitter, healthier and happier….together!
